Summary: Under general direction, incumbent(s) manages the District’s special systems equipment by maintaining, installing, and updating current systems, including, but not limited to, fire/intrusion detection and suppression, access control, and surveillance systems.  Incumbent(s) provides ongoing training to subordinate on appropriate tasks pertaining to the maintenance and preventive maintenance of these special systems.  Incumbent(s) coordinates with District safety and security staff, school personnel, administration, and the crisis team to ensure the protection of students, staff, community, and District property.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Manages the security and protection of District property by ensuring that fire and intrusion detection, fire suppression, access control, surveillance systems, and related communications infrastructure are functioning properly. Supports these systems by maintaining records, performing recurring inspections and preventative maintenance, servicing, installing, and testing devices, maintaining database of system information and history, establishing security codes for employees, performing annual security code audits, and assists employees in troubleshooting special systems issues.
  • Communicates and trains principals and District staff regarding proper operation of special systems. Responds to shift/incident report information prepared by public safety officers from the previous shift.  Communicates with safety and mentoring staff and supervisor regarding all special systems issues that may adversely affect the educational process.  Proactively repairs special systems and communicates outcome to appropriate staff including capital projects and maintenance, safety and mentoring, facility managers, principals, and supervisor. 
  • Oversees the District’s special systems equipment to include researching new methods and trends, developing and coordinating procedures and practices, participating in short and long term capital planning, evaluating current systems, meeting with outside agencies and vendors to review needs, outcomes of inspections, and identifying and resolving related problems.
  • Promptly records and submits all required job task information including, materials, labor hours, and ‘action taken’ on District work order system. Daily review of assigned tasks in District work order system to ensure incumbent is aware of all outstanding work orders.
  • Coordinates and provides access to vendors contracted by the District as directed by supervisor.
  • Performs periodic and random inspections consisting of testing special systems to ensure maximum protection against vandalism, burglary, arson, trespass, and theft to District facilities. Maintains inspection reports and records and advises supervisor of deficiencies and remedial efforts to improve deficiencies.  Develops, updates, and maintains posted operating instructions for special systems.  Coordinates technical writing and placement of instructions at District facilities with standards set forth by supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or administration.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

To be eligible for this position, an applicant must meet the following required qualifications.  In addition, verification of these required qualifications is necessary.

 

  • High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to being hired;
  • Five years of verifiable special systems experience with continuously increasing technical responsibilities

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

It is preferred that applicant possesses the following preferred qualifications; however, the following qualifications are not required to be eligible for this position.

 

  • Possesses credential(s) from National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies
  • Seven years of verifiable special systems experience with continuously increasing technical responsibilities

Skills required, but not limited to, for this position include:

 

  • Understanding of relay logic, proprietary system programming, and binary and/or cipher based data encryption;
  • Understanding and proficiency in proprietary systems manufactured by Bosch, Ready Key Pro, and Fire Control Instruments;
  • Reading technical manuals and programming proprietary systems;
  • Identifying and proficiently using the tools and equipment necessary to maintain the special systems;
  • Comprehending and proficiently implementing systems options to maximize safety and security needs for facilities;
  • Understanding and proficiently applying minor repair functions in areas such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, roofing, HVAC, etc.;
  • Scheduling and monitoring work performance;
  • Setting up and maintaining records;
  • Using computer software related programs;
  • Engaging and encouraging communication skills while interacting with supervisors, staff, students, etc. to exchange information.
