Summary: Under general direction, incumbent(s) meets demands and completes work orders in a timely manner; installs, repairs and fabricates components out of metal; ensures availability and functioning of required items; and ensures that any safety concerns are resolved immediately. In addition, incumbent(s) completes work orders, maintains reports and logs, communicates with District staff members, monitors inventory of supplies and equipment and ensures compliance.

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Maintains welds on various items using a variety of processes (manual arc, tungsten inert gas, metallic inert gas, brazing, cement core drilling, sheet metal, steam-fitting, etc.) for the purposes of ensuring units are operating safely and correctly.   Repairs metal surfaces (e.g. doors, drain covers, fences, gates, grates, parts, electric motorized gates, sheet metal, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safe and efficient use of items.  Designs, fabricates and installs various items (e.g. railings, fences, gates, etc.) for the purpose of completing projects safely and within established time frames.  Performs routine and preventive maintenance for the purpose of ensuring the ongoing functioning of required tools and equipment.
  • Fabricates metal parts as needed and/or assigned (e.g. cut, shape and assemble replacement parts, etc.) for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.  Informs supervisor of status of work orders for the purpose of providing information for making decisions, taking appropriate action and/or complying with health and safety regulations. Assists other trades personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Records and submits all required job task information including, materials, labor hours, and ‘action taken’ on District work order system.  Reviews assigned tasks in District work order system to ensure incumbent is aware of all outstanding work orders.
  • Performs periodic and random inspections of welding and fabricating equipment.  Ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.  Maintains inspection reports and records and advises supervisor of deficiencies and remedial efforts to improve deficiencies.
  • Develops fencing drawings, submits drawings to applicable authorities (i.e. State fire marshal, municipality, et al) and ensures that all plan review processes and field inspections are coordinated successfully.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

 

To be eligible for this position, an applicant must meet the following required qualifications.  Verification of these required qualifications is necessary.

 

  • High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to being hired;
  • Five years of verifiable welding/metal fabricating experience with continuously increasing technical responsibilities;
  • Valid Arizona Department of Transportation Driver’s License prior to hire.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

It is preferred that applicant possesses the following preferred qualifications; however, the following qualifications are not required to be eligible for this position.

 

  • Possesses credential(s) from an accredited trades school;
  • Seven years of verifiable welding/metal fabricating experience with continuously increasing technical responsibilities;
  • Valid Arizona Department of Transportation Commercial Driver’s License prior to hire.

  • Identifying and proficiently using the tools and equipment necessary for proper maintenance;
  • Comprehending and proficiently implementing systems options to maximize useful life of equipment;
  • Understanding and proficiently applying minor repair functions in areas such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, roofing, HVAC, etc.;
  • Scheduling and monitoring work performance;
  • Setting up and maintaining records;
  • Using computer software related programs;
  • Engaging and encouraging communication skills while interacting with supervisors, staff, students, etc. to exchange information.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
