Summary:  Under general direction, incumbent(s) oversees the implementation of the District’s special education, English Language Learning, and gifted programs within the school.

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Oversees the implementation of the District’s special education, English Language Learning, and gifted programs at the school to ensure that applicable laws and District policies and procedures are adhered to.  Trains and assists staff regarding these procedures. 
  • Facilitates processes to provide interventions to teachers and parents prior to Team Approach Process (TAP) referrals, including monitoring functional behavioral assessments and student behavior intervention plans, attending TAP meetings, monitoring case management, ensuring policies and laws are being complied with, and training teachers and staff on processing behavior assessments and student behavior intervention plans.
  • Oversees the process in which annual Special Education evaluations and Individual Education Plan (IEPs) are completed.
  • Oversees and coordinates the testing of ELL and Gifted students.  Trains instructional aides and bilingual testing specialist on the testing procedures.
  • Serves as a liaison with the District’s Special Services, school administrators and staff, teachers, parents, students, and outside resources in regards to the special education, English Language Learning, and gifted programs for the school.  Serves as a consultant to administration, District Special Services staff, and teachers to accomplish program goals for special education, ELL, and Gifted programs.
  • Oversees the special education registration process and transitions within the site.  Checks with students’ previous districts, schools, and psychologists to ensure paperwork is complete. 
  • Develops and implements a plan to review special education referral requests and provides in-service to staff for implementation of the process.
  • Ensures that parental procedural safeguards are implemented within time guidelines as outlined by federal and state laws and District policies.
  • Coordinates activities to process and place eligible students into self-contained special education programs within site.  Ensures special needs students are placed in appropriate programs. 
  • Performs other duties as required.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

To be eligible for this position, an applicant must meet the following required qualifications.  Verification of these required qualifications is necessary.

 

Bachelor degree in education or related field and three years of public school teaching experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.  ELL and/or Special Education teaching experience is preferred.  Must have a valid Arizona Teacher Certificate.  Valid Special Education, ESL, and/or Bilingual teacher certificate is preferred.
