Summary:  Under general direction incumbents diagnose, repair and maintain all District vehicles and heavy equipment including gas and diesel engines; air conditioning units; hydraulic, air, anti-lock and parking brakes; heating systems; and electrical systems.  TOOLS PROVIDED

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Repairs and tests steering and suspension systems; heating and cooling systems including recovering unacceptable refrigerants and recharging systems with proper refrigerants; gas and diesel internal combustion engines; and, drive lines including transmissions, drive shafts and axle assemblies.  Receive direction…

 

  • Repairs brake systems including hydraulic, air, anti-lock, and parking brakes.  Determines tools, parts and equipment needed for completing work.

 

  • Informs lead mechanic and fleet maintenance supervisor regarding potential issues or safety hazards.

 

  • Completes and tracks work orders to include documenting details of the performance. 

 

  • Inspects vehicle body and determines whether repair can be made in house or outside.  Performs minor body repair.  

 

  • Maintains compliance with District policy and procedures, State and federal laws regarding safety, and best practices of the trade.

 

  • Responds to emergency road calls for buses and other vehicles which are inoperative including determining if vehicles need to be towed or if  they can be fixed on the spot.  Determines if buses should be put out-of-service due to mechanical problems.

 

  • Participates in staff meetings and attends seminars related to fleet maintenance.  Maintains a working knowledge of the fleet maintenance requirements and specifics.

 

  • Serves as a backup bus driver as needed.

 

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

To be eligible for this position, an applicant must meet the following required qualifications.  Verification of these required qualifications is necessary.

 

  • High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to being hired;
  • One year of mechanic experience;
  • Possession of valid Arizona Department of Transportation Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) with a

       passenger endorsement within sixty days of hire.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

It is preferred that applicant possesses the following preferred qualifications; however, the following qualifications are not required to be eligible for this position.

 

  • Possession of automotive service excellence (ASE) certification;
  • One year of technical training in automotive and/or heavy equipment maintenance;
  • Two years of school bus maintenance experience.
