Appropriate Certification Requirements

*Hold a valid Arizona teaching certificate(A.R.S § 15-502.B)-Intern, Provisional, Reciprocal or Standard-
     -Early Childhood Birth-Age 8 or Grade 3, OR
     -Elementary 1-8, OR
     -Secondary 7-12, OR
     -Special Education K-12, (Cross-Categorical , Emotional Disability, Learning Disability, Mental Retardation, 
       Orthopedic/Other Health Impairment or Severely and Profoundly Disabled),  OR

     -Foreign Teacher, (grade designations apply), AND
*Structured English Immersion (SEI) requirements, AND
*a valid Identity Verified Print (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card

*Bachelor's degree, AND 
*Holds a valid Arizona teaching certificate                 

 
 
Structured English Immersion (SEI) Requirements
 
Structured English Immersion requirements must be met for the following certificates;

Early Childhood Elementary K-8   Secondary & STEM 7-12 Teaching Intern
Principal Superintendent    Interim Administrator Supervisor
Special Education ARTS Education Career & Technical Foreign Teacher


All persons certified before August 31, 2006, must complete 15 clock hours or 1 semester hour of approved SEI Provisional training and have this endorsement added to their certificate. (Mandated R7-2-613 J.2.c.)
All persons certified after August 31, 2006, must complete 45 clock hours or 3 semester hours of approved SEI Provisional training and have this endorsement added to their certificate to meet the requirements for the Provisional SEI Endorsement. (Mandated R7-2-613 J.1.))
Within three years of obtaining the Provisional SEI Endorsement, all persons must complete an additional 45 clock hours or 3 semester hours of approved SEI training to apply for their Full SEI Endorsement. (Mandated R7-2-613 J.1.)
Reciprocity: The requirements for a Provisional SEI Endorsement may be waived for a period not to exceed one year in accordance with certification reciprocity as prescribed in A.A.C.R7-2-621. First Time Issuances of a Provisional Teaching or Administrative Certificate (Out of State Graduates only) The requirements for a Provisional SEI Endorsement may be waived for a period not to exceed one year in accordance with certification first time issuances of a Provisional Teaching or Administrative Certificate for applicants graduating from out of state teacher/administrator preparation programs only.
Classroom teachers or Administrators holding a full English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement or a full Bilingual Endorsement do not need to obtain the Full SEI Endorsement, however nothing in this rule prevents school districts from requiring certified staff to obtain an SEI Endorsement in addition to an ESL or Bilingual Endorsement as a condition of employment. Certificates exempt from SEI include: Adult Education, Athletic Coaching, Emergency Teaching, Emergency Substitute, Guidance Counselor, JROTC, School Psychologist, Speech-Language Technician, Speech-Language Pathologist, and Substitute.
